Introducing MEng Structural Engineering with Architecture

Structural engineering and architecture combine to shape the built environment that surrounds us.

They determine everything from design and construction to material use and aesthetics.

This interdisciplinary programme is taught jointly with the Edinburgh School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture (ESALA), which is part of the Edinburgh College of Art.

It will equip you with highly valuable training in structural engineering and give you a deep appreciation of the architectural context. It will prepare you for a holistic approach to sustainable building design and professional licensure.

In Year 1, you will spend approximately half of your time taking architecture classes. This architecture component continues in later years when you may also choose to focus on architectural aspects for your final year research project.

You will build on fundamental concepts of structural engineering and learn how to apply scientific knowledge and modern engineering tools to design, analyse, construct and maintain all major forms of infrastructure.

This programme draws on our areas of expertise in structural engineering and architecture:

  • the use of novel and sustainable building materials
  • architectural and engineering design methods
  • the impact of construction on its users, the community, and the environment

Year 1

Civil Engineers solve complex problems and are skilled at working in interdisciplinary teams to tackle society's challenges. Architects are visionaries who conceive and plan our constructed world.

In Year 1, you will take introductory courses to develop the skills which you will need to succeed at the interface between Architecture and Engineering.

You will:

  • develop your critical thinking teamworking, and problem-solving skills in interdisciplinary engineering and architectural design tasks
  • learn the fundamental mathematics that underpins engineering science and design
  • study Architectural History and the technological and environmental principles that underpin architectural design

Year 2

In Year 2, you will take courses across the breadth of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Architecture, to prepare you to take more specialised courses in later years. We will introduce you to:

  • a deeper look at architectural history
  • structural mechanics
  • engineering materials
  • soil and rock mechanics and engineering geology
  • engineering mathematics
  • land surveying

You will choose optional courses covering amongst other subjects:

  • architecture
  • fire safety engineering
  • environmental engineering and sustainability
  • courses from outside of Engineering to broaden your general knowledge

Year 3

In Year 3, you will start your honours programme and encounter more specialist courses covering topics in:

  • the synergy of structure and architecture
  • conceptual design and sustainability
  • geotechnical engineering
  • structural analysis
  • transport systems engineering
  • engineering construction

You will also have the opportunity to choose from Engineering options from across the School, highlighting the multidisciplinary nature of modern engineers.

Progression routes

At the end of Year 3, you will have the option to complete one more year for a BEng degree, or a further two years for an MEng degree.

The latter is subject to you achieving an average of 55% or higher in Year 3.

Year 4

You will take a mix of courses, covering Civil Engineering and Architectural knowledge. In your core courses, you will cover topics including:

  • advanced courses in structural design and architecture
  • foundation engineering
  • engineering design

You will also have the chance to choose specialist optional Engineering courses in:

  • environmental engineering
  • geotechnical engineering
  • fire safety engineering
  • engineering construction
  • construction management
  • structural dynamics
  • offshore and renewable energy

These courses will prepare you for further specialisms in your final year, as well as for your final year research project.

Year 5

You will take further advanced courses, covering aspects of architectural knowledge and design, structural engineering, and learning from engineering failures.

You will also complete a research project and submit your research thesis (or dissertation). You will complete a thorough review of the engineering and/or architectural context and provide a unique solution through experimental, numerical, or analytical means, working with supervisors who are world-leaders in their research fields from either Engineering or in the Architecture Schools.

Our facilities

As this is a joint honours degree across the School of Engineering and Edinburgh College of Art, your taught courses will be delivered across two different campus locations within the city.

Architecture-related courses will primarily be delivered in the University's central campus area, close to the city centre. Engineering courses will primarily be delivered on the King's Buildings campus, around 15 minutes from central Edinburgh by bus.

Here you will have access to a wide range of practical facilities including:

  • the Rushbrook Fire Lab
  • laboratories for large structures and materials.

You may also study at various University campus locations in the vibrant city of Edinburgh, depending on the option courses selected.

Standard entry requirement

The standard entry requirement is:

  • SQA Highers: AABB by end of S5 or AAAB by end of S6. BBB must be achieved in one year of S4-S6.
  • A Levels: AAA - ABB in one set of exams.
  • IB: 37 points with 666 at HL - 32 points with 655 at HL.

  • SQA Highers: AABB by end of S6. BBB must be achieved in one year of S4-S6.

Required subjects

The grades used to meet our entry requirements must include:

  • SQA: Highers: Mathematics at A and one of Physics (preferred), Biology, Chemistry, Computing Science or Engineering Science at B. Higher Applications of Mathematics is not accepted in place of Higher Mathematics. National 5s: Physics or Engineering Science at B and English at C.
  • A Levels: Mathematics and one of Physics (preferred), Biology, Chemistry, Computing Science/Computing, Design & Technology (excluding Food Technology) or Engineering at B. GCSEs: Physics or Science at B or 6 and English at C or 4.
  • IB: HL: Mathematics (Analysis and approaches only) and one of Physics (preferred), Biology, Chemistry, Computing Science or Design Technology at 5. SL: Physics at 5 (if not at HL) and English at 5.

Regardless of your nationality or country of residence, you must demonstrate a level of English language competency which will enable you to succeed in your studies..

SQA, GCSE and IB

For SQA, GCSE and IB students, unless a higher level is specified in the stated entry requirements, a pass is required in English at the following grades or higher:

  • SQA National 5 at C
  • GCSE at C or 4
  • Level 2 Certificate at C
  • IB Standard Level at 5 (English ab initio is not accepted for entry)

English language tests

We accept the following English language qualifications at the grades specified:

  • IELTS Academic: total 6.5 with at least 5.5 in each component. We do not accept IELTS One Skill Retake to meet our English language requirements.
  • TOEFL-iBT (including Home Edition): total 92 with at least 20 in each component. We do not accept TOEFL MyBest Score to meet our English language requirements.
  • C1 Advanced (CAE) / C2 Proficiency (CPE): total 176 with at least 162 in each component.
  • Trinity ISE: ISE II with distinctions in all four components.
  • PTE Academic: total 65 with at least 54 in each component. We do not accept PTE Academic Online.
  • Oxford ELLT: 7 overall with at least 5 in each component.*

We also accept a wider range of international qualifications and tests.

Unless you are a national of a majority English speaking country, your English language qualification must be no more than three and a half years old from the start of the month in which the degree you are applying to study begins. If you are using an IELTS, PTE Academic, TOEFL, Oxford ELLT, or Trinity ISE test, it must be no more than two years old on the first of the month in which the degree begins, regardless of your nationality.
